Higo style swords for
iaido
Higo style iaito feature more metal in the koshirae (fittings) than
jidai style iaitoh. In feudal times, the metal craftsmen in Higo province
were supported by the Daimyo. They were skilled with forging of iron,
copper, brass and working with cloisonne. The characteristics of Higo
style iaito are the rounded kashira and kojiri; the tsuka wrap of ray or
shark skin wrap (same) maybe black and the tsuka binding was often leather.
This style of sword is also varied as "Edo higo koshirae", with
a simpler saya, no metal kojiri and natural colored same. Most of our
Higo style iaitoh are of the latter style.
